Progressive
Barack Obama's presidency (2009–2017) reflected Progressivism through policies such as the Affordable Care Act, financial regulations (Dodd-Frank), and climate initiatives. His administration balanced progressive reforms with pragmatic governance, respecting democratic institutions while expanding government intervention in healthcare, financial oversight, and consumer protections. Despite criticism of surveillance policies, his administration promoted broader civil liberties and social progress within a constitutional framework.
What it believes
Institutions can be reformed toward justice, and should be, continuously: expand the franchise, clean the water, break the trusts, open the schools — a permanent improvement program run on evidence, coalitions, and moral impatience.
The appeal
Its trophy case is the modern baseline: food safety, child-labor laws, suffrage, clean air. 'Reform works' is not a theory here but an inventory, and every generation's activists start from it.
Where it breaks
Reform's ratchet slips: yesterday's victories become today's bureaucracies, moral impatience curdles into moralism, and the program's professional class drifts from the people it reforms on behalf of — the populist backlash reads this cell as its establishment.
Among its neighbours
The Social Democrat above anchors the same energy in labor's institutions. The Eco-Socialist beside it says reform can't price survival. Below, the Autonomist gave up on the institutions entirely. Marketward, the Nordic Liberal shows the program at cruising altitude.
