Conservative Capitalist
Hong Kong under British colonial rule (Pre-1997) represents Conservative Capitalism. The economy was highly laissez-faire, with minimal regulation and low taxation, making it one of the freest markets globally. However, political opposition was restricted, and governance focused on stability rather than democracy. Press freedoms were tolerated but controlled, ensuring colonial administration maintained order.
What it believes
Free markets flourish best inside a traditional moral order: low taxes and light regulation, yes — but also family, faith, and flag as the cultural infrastructure that keeps contract society from dissolving into appetite.
The appeal
It is fusionism — the marriage that built the postwar Anglo right: capital for the traditionalists, tradition for the capitalists. Reagan and Thatcher governed from this cell, and its coalition won for forty years.
Where it breaks
The market it worships dissolves the traditions it mourns — big-box retail closed the sabbath, algorithms raised the children — and the marriage keeps ending in recrimination: libertarians decamp downward, nationalists upward.

The National Capitalist above conscripts the market for the nation. The Technocrat beside it swaps the faith for metrics. Below, the Capitalist drops the hymnal and keeps the ledger. The Conservative to its left preserved institutions before portfolios.
