Liberal Democrat

The Weimar Republic under Paul von Hindenburg showcased Liberal Democracy, blending free-market capitalism with state intervention. It introduced labor laws and social insurance while upholding political pluralism and civil liberties. However, political extremism ultimately challenged the democratic institutions it sought to preserve.

Liberal Democrat · cell 5·3
§ The territory

What it believes

Elections, rights, and law — the full liberal-democratic package as an end in itself: alternation in power, loyal opposition, independent courts, and a public square where the government can be called a liar before lunch.

The appeal

Everything else in this atlas must eventually answer its question: how do you remove rulers without shooting them? It remains the only tested answer, and every cell that governs decently does so inside its frame.

Where it breaks

Procedure without material substance hollows: when both parties serve the same donors, alternation changes little, and demagogues learn to win the rituals while gutting the referees — democracy's forms turned against its content.

Among its neighbours

The Social Liberal above adds the welfare floor; the Social Democrat beside it, the economic program. Below, the Nordic Liberal is its Scandinavian dress. Marketward, the Welfare Capitalist keeps the settlement with the emphasis flipped toward enterprise.
