§ Where Walter Reuther stands
3 axesReuther began as a socialist but came to seek security within capitalism. The 1950 contract with General Motors dubbed the Treaty of Detroit and the 1955 Ford agreement creating supplementary unemployment benefits wrote pensions, health cover and layoff pay into private contracts, building a company-based welfare system for unionised workers. He still pushed further, demanding in the 1945–46 strike that GM hold its prices and open its books.
Reuther was a democratic trade unionist who believed in pluralism and collective bargaining rather than state direction or revolution. After winning the UAW presidency in 1946 he drove communists from its leadership, helped found Americans for Democratic Action in 1947 and engineered the 1955 merger of the AFL and CIO, working throughout within the Democratic Party and liberal institutions.
Reuther was among the white labour leaders most committed to civil rights. The UAW helped post bail for jailed demonstrators in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963, Reuther spoke at the March on Washington that August and lobbied for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and in 1965 he joined César Chávez's striking farmworkers at Delano, California.

HistoricalWalter Philip Reuther (1907–1970) was president of the United Automobile Workers from 1946 until his death and one of the most influential labour leaders in American history. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, to a German immigrant father steeped in socialist trade unionism, he became a skilled tool-and-die maker in Detroit, worked with his brother Victor at a Soviet car plant in Gorky from 1933 to 1935 and returned to help organise the auto industry. In 1937 Ford's security men beat him at the Battle of the Overpass outside the River Rouge plant.
Having left the Socialists for the New Deal coalition, Reuther led the 113-day strike against General Motors in 1945–46 and, as UAW president, drove communists from the leadership and won the 1950 GM contract dubbed the Treaty of Detroit, trading labour peace for pensions, health insurance and pay tied to living costs and productivity. He headed the CIO from 1952, helped merge it with the AFL in 1955 and spoke at the 1963 March on Washington. Critics argue that bargaining for private benefits weakened the push for a universal welfare state. He died in a plane crash in 1970.
