§ Where Nicolae Ceaușescu stands
3 axesCeaușescu ran one of the most rigid command economies in the Soviet bloc, pouring investment into heavy industry such as steel and petrochemicals. After borrowing heavily in the 1970s, he resolved in the early 1980s to repay Romania's entire foreign debt, a goal reached in 1989, by exporting food and energy while rationing both at home, and his systematisation programme planned to bulldoze villages into agro-industrial centres.
After touring China and North Korea he issued the July Theses of 1971, launching a cultural crackdown and a personality cult that hailed him as the Conducător. The Securitate built a vast informer network, typewriters had to be registered with the police, and from 1980 Elena served as first deputy prime minister, turning the regime into a family dictatorship.
Ceaușescu's communism was nationalist and pronatalist rather than socially liberal. Decree 770 of 1966 outlawed most abortions to raise the birth rate, divorce was made far harder, and propaganda glorified Romania's Dacian and Roman ancestry; yet his regime also demolished churches and historic quarters of Bucharest for the House of the Republic, leaving him near the centre with a traditional tilt.

HistoricalNicolae Ceaușescu (1918–1989) led communist Romania from 1965 until his overthrow in December 1989, as general secretary of the Romanian Communist Party and, from 1974, as the country's first president. The son of peasants from Scornicești, he joined the illegal communist movement as a teenage apprentice in Bucharest and spent years in prison, where he befriended the future party leader Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej. After 1945 he rose through the party apparatus and succeeded Gheorghiu-Dej on his death in March 1965.
Ceaușescu won Western praise in 1968 when he condemned the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, but at home he built one of Eastern Europe's most repressive states, policed by the Securitate and centred on a cult of himself and his wife, Elena. His drive to pay off Romania's foreign debt in the 1980s imposed shortages of food, heating and electricity, and his ban on abortion led to thousands of maternal deaths and overcrowded orphanages. Protests that began in Timișoara in December 1989 spread to Bucharest; he and Elena were captured, tried by a military tribunal and shot on 25 December.

Protests began in Timișoara on 16 December, and after crowds jeered Ceaușescu at a Bucharest rally on 21 December, the army switched sides. He and Elena fled by helicopter and were captured, and on 25 December a hastily convened military tribunal in Târgoviște convicted them of genocide and undermining the national economy, among other charges. They were shot immediately; the summary trial has been widely criticised.
