§ Where Ignazio Cassis stands
3 axesCassis is a market liberal from FDP.The Liberals, the traditional party of Swiss business, and as foreign minister he made secure access to the European single market a central aim. After the Federal Council abandoned the draft institutional framework agreement in May 2021, his department negotiated a new package of agreements with the EU, concluded in December 2024, to stabilise the bilateral trade relationship on which Swiss exporters depend.
Cassis is a liberal democrat who works within Switzerland's decentralised, consensus-based system, in which the seven-member Federal Council shares executive power and major decisions can be put to referendum. As president in 2022 he championed what he called cooperative neutrality, under which Switzerland adopted EU sanctions against Russia while staying outside military alliances, and that July he hosted the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Lugano.
On social questions Cassis belongs to the FDP's liberal mainstream, pairing support for an open society with attachment to Swiss institutions. As foreign minister he campaigned for free movement of people with the EU against the Swiss People's Party's limitation initiative, which voters rejected in September 2020, and in 2017 he gave up the Italian citizenship he had held from birth before joining the Federal Council.

Born in Sessa, Ticino, to Italian parents, he trained as a physician and public-health specialist and was cantonal doctor of Ticino from 1996 to 2008. He sat in the National Council from 2007 to 2017 and led the FDP's parliamentary group before his election to the government.
