The Northern Kingdoms run on trade, guild crafts, mining and royal taxation, with the crown balancing the interests of merchants, nobles and towns. In the saga the kingdom of Kovir grows rich from its mines and its neutrality, while the other northern kings pay for their wars against the Nilfgaardian Empire through levies and taxes. The economy is mercantile and privately owned, operating under royal privilege rather than central planning.

Governance+74
LibertarianAuthoritarian

The northern monarchs are hereditary rulers who command armies, appoint ministers and decide war and peace, constrained mainly by their nobles, by the mages and by one another. In Blood of Elves the kings meet in secret at Hagge to plan for war with Nilfgaard, and spymasters such as Redania's Sigismund Dijkstra wield power behind the throne. Authority flows downward from the crown.

Dynasty, lineage and custom hold the northern realms together. Succession and royal blood drive the plot, from Queen Calanthe's Cintra to the hunt for Ciri, the princess whose bloodline every power covets, and elves, dwarves and other non-humans face prejudice and pogroms in the human kingdoms. The crown's legitimacy rests on tradition rather than on any idea of popular rights.

§ The story

Fiction

King Régis is an illustrative figure rather than a named character in the books: 99ideologies uses him to represent the sovereigns of the Northern Kingdoms in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher saga, which began with a short story in the Polish magazine Fantastyka in 1986, grew into five novels published from 1994 to 1999 and was adapted into CD Projekt Red's video games and a Netflix series. Monarchs such as Foltest of Temeria and Vizimir of Redania rule hereditary realms amid nobles, guilds, mages and rival crowns.

The figure stands for the bound sovereign of fantasy fiction: a king whose power rests on dynasty, custom and the support of the great houses rather than on law alone. Sapkowski's kings scheme, betray and go to war over territory and succession, and his sceptical portrait of crowned heads, court mages and spymasters, carried to a global audience by the 2015 game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the Netflix adaptation from 2019, has made the saga one of fantasy's best-known studies of power politics.

4 answers

What is King Régis's political ideology?

King Régis, an illustrative stand-in for the Witcher saga's northern monarchs, represents hereditary kingship bound by custom, council and the great houses: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, a Traditional Constitutional Monarchist. Economically he sits on the market side (+48), ruling mercantile realms of guilds, mines and trade. On governance he is strongly authoritarian (+74), since the crown commands armies and decides war and peace, and socially he is firmly traditional (−55), resting his legitimacy on dynasty and lineage.

Is King Régis left-wing or right-wing?

Right-wing in the traditional sense. The figure stands for monarchy, aristocracy and inherited order, the classic positions of the pre-modern right, and nothing in the northern kingdoms of the Witcher saga resembles popular sovereignty or social equality. Sapkowski, however, writes about such kings with irony rather than admiration: his monarchs scheme, betray and wage war for territory and succession, and the saga's sympathies lie with outsiders such as Geralt, Ciri and the persecuted non-humans.

How much power do kings have in The Witcher?

A great deal in law, less in practice. The rulers of Temeria, Redania, Kaedwen and Aedirn are hereditary monarchs who command armies and conclude treaties, but the saga shows them constrained by powerful nobles, by spymasters such as Sigismund Dijkstra and by sorceresses who advise and manipulate them, notably through the secret Lodge of Sorceresses formed after the Thanedd coup. Kings can also fall to assassins, as Vizimir of Redania does in the novels, leaving power to regents and advisers.

Which minds are closest to King Régis (illustrative)?
