§ Where Elon Musk stands
3 axesMusk champions private enterprise, competition and lighter regulation, and SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 rockets, first recovered in 2015, cut launch costs in a field long dominated by state agencies. Yet his firms have relied on public money, from NASA contracts to electric-vehicle incentives, and he has backed a carbon tax and predicted, at the 2017 World Government Summit, that automation will make a universal basic income necessary.
Musk distrusts regulators and bureaucracy: he defied Alameda County's Covid-19 orders to reopen Tesla's Fremont factory in May 2020, clashed repeatedly with the Securities and Exchange Commission and in 2025 led a drive to cut federal staff and programmes through the Department of Government Efficiency. Critics point to the tension between that anti-state rhetoric and the power he exercised inside government.
Once broadly socially liberal, Musk has moved toward cultural traditionalism. He campaigns against falling birth rates, opposes gender transition for minors and what he calls woke ideology, and in December 2024 he endorsed Germany's AfD in a newspaper article before that country's 2025 election. He nonetheless supports high-skilled immigration, which has put him at odds with parts of the nationalist right.

LivingElon Reeve Musk (born 1971) is a South African-born entrepreneur and engineer whose companies span rockets, electric cars, satellite internet and social media. Raised in Pretoria, he moved to Canada at 17 and studied economics and physics at the University of Pennsylvania before co-founding the web company Zip2 and the online bank X.com, which merged into PayPal. He founded the rocket company SpaceX in 2002, became chief executive of the electric-car maker Tesla in 2008 and bought Twitter in 2022, renaming it X in 2023.
Musk's politics shifted sharply in the 2020s. A self-described former Democratic voter, he turned against what he calls the woke mind virus, reinstated many banned accounts after buying Twitter and in 2024 endorsed Donald Trump, spending more than $250 million to support his campaign. In 2025 he led the Department of Government Efficiency, a cost-cutting drive across federal agencies that drew lawsuits and protests, before leaving the administration and clashing publicly with Trump over the budget. Supporters see a champion of free speech and innovation; critics, a billionaire with outsized political influence.
