HistoricalAnders Fogh Rasmussen (b. 1953) is a Danish politician who served as prime minister of Denmark from 2001 to 2009 and as secretary general of NATO from 2009 to 2014. Born in Ginnerup in Jutland and trained as an economist at Aarhus University, he entered the Folketing for the liberal Venstre party in 1978, served as tax minister from 1987 and as economics minister until 1992, and became party leader in 1998.
His 1993 book From Social State to Minimal State made him a standard-bearer of market liberalism, but in office he governed more cautiously, leading Venstre–Conservative coalitions backed by the Danish People's Party, freezing rather than slashing taxes and keeping the welfare state. His governments tightened immigration law, joined the 2003 invasion of Iraq and merged Denmark's municipalities in 2007. The 2005–06 crisis over Jyllands-Posten's cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, in which he declined to meet ambassadors of Muslim-majority countries, made him a symbol of free speech to supporters and of insensitivity to critics.
