Farage is a self-declared admirer of Margaret Thatcher whose economics favour low taxes, deregulation and free trade with the wider world outside the EU. Reform UK's 2024 platform proposed raising the income-tax personal allowance to £20,000 and scrapping net-zero targets. His populism tempers the free-market line: he has pledged to keep the NHS free at the point of use.

National sovereignty is the core of his politics: he spent two decades in the European Parliament campaigning for Britain to leave the EU. He favours firm state action on borders, and in 2024 Reform campaigned to freeze non-essential immigration and to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, while pursuing those aims through elections and parliamentary politics.

Immigration has been Farage's signature issue since UKIP attacked free movement after the EU's 2004 enlargement, arguing that it held down wages and strained housing and public services. He presents himself as a defender of British national identity against both Brussels and a metropolitan establishment. His traditionalism rests on nation and borders more than on religion or sexual morality.

§ The story

Living

Nigel Paul Farage (born 1964) is a British politician and broadcaster. Educated at Dulwich College, he worked as a metals trader in the City of London before leaving the Conservative Party in 1992 in protest at the Maastricht Treaty and becoming a founding member of the UK Independence Party in 1993. He sat in the European Parliament for South East England from 1999 to 2020, led UKIP in 2006–2009 and 2010–2016, launched the Brexit Party in 2019 and became leader of its successor, Reform UK, in 2024.

Farage turned Euroscepticism from a fringe cause into a mass movement. UKIP's rise in the early 2010s added to the pressure that led David Cameron to promise a referendum on EU membership, and Britain voted to leave in 2016. His Brexit Party topped the 2019 European elections, and in 2024 he won Clacton, entering the Commons at his eighth attempt. Critics accuse him of stoking hostility to migrants, notably with the 2016 Breaking Point poster of a queue of refugees; supporters credit him with voicing concerns the main parties ignored.

What is Nigel Farage's political ideology?

Nigel Farage is a national-populist Eurosceptic: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, a Traditional Right-Wing Nationalist. Economically he sits clearly on the market right (+56), a Thatcherite who favours low taxes, deregulation and free trade. On governance he leans authoritarian (+42), putting national sovereignty and tough border control first, including Reform UK's 2024 call to leave the European Convention on Human Rights. Socially he is firmly traditional (−52), above all in his opposition to large-scale immigration.

Right-wing, of the populist rather than the establishment kind. He pitches himself against the leaderships of both main parties and has won many former Labour voters in post-industrial towns, but that reflects his anti-establishment style and focus on immigration, not left-wing economics.

What role did Nigel Farage play in Brexit?
