3 axesMeloni governs a market economy with a pro-business, pro-family tilt. Her government replaced the citizens' income, a broad anti-poverty benefit, with narrower support from 2024, extended the flat tax for the self-employed and cut payroll taxes on lower earners. Its nationalism also produced interventions, such as a surprise 2023 windfall tax on bank profits that was later softened.
Meloni favours a strong executive and firm control of borders. Her government proposed a constitutional reform to have the prime minister directly elected, which won a first Senate vote in 2024, and in 2023 signed a deal with Albania to hold migrants in Italian-run centres there. She has nonetheless governed within Italy's constitution and EU rules.
Meloni is a firm social conservative. Her 2019 rally speech defined her as a woman, a mother, an Italian and a Christian; her government added birth rate to the title of the family ministry, and a 2024 law made surrogacy a crime even when Italians arrange it abroad. She opposes adoption by same-sex couples and frames migration as a threat to national identity.

LivingGiorgia Meloni (born 1977) is an Italian politician who in October 2022 became Italy's first woman prime minister. Raised by her mother in the working-class Garbatella district of Rome, she joined the youth wing of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) at 15 and rose through the youth organisations of its successor, National Alliance. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2006, she served as minister of youth under Silvio Berlusconi from 2008 to 2011, then co-founded Brothers of Italy in 2012 and became its leader in 2014.
Brothers of Italy grew from about 4% of the vote in 2018 to 26% in 2022, making Meloni the dominant force in a coalition with the League and Forza Italia. The party's descent from the MSI, whose tricolour flame it kept in its logo, made her rise controversial at home and abroad; she has said the Italian right consigned fascism to history decades ago and condemns the 1938 racial laws. In office she has combined hardline positions on migration, the family and national identity with mainstream support for NATO, Ukraine and the European Union's budget rules.
