Snowden's cause is liberty rather than economics, and his placement reflects a libertarian-leaning, market-friendly outlook formed in the technology world. He made small donations to Ron Paul's libertarian presidential campaign in 2012, and his writing shows little interest in redistribution, focusing instead on the power that governments and technology companies hold over personal data.

Snowden's 2013 disclosures exposed secret programmes including the bulk collection of phone records under Section 215 of the Patriot Act and the PRISM system for obtaining internet companies' data. A federal appeals court ruled the phone-records programme unlawful in 2015, Congress ended it through the USA Freedom Act that year, and in 2020 another appeals court found it unlawful and possibly unconstitutional.

Snowden treats privacy as the foundation of other freedoms, arguing in his memoir Permanent Record (2019) that a society without private space cannot sustain free thought, journalism or dissent. He has promoted encryption and tools that protect journalists and their sources, and his progressivism is individualist and civil-libertarian rather than tied to the cultural left.

§ The story

Living

Edward Joseph Snowden (born 1983) is an American former intelligence contractor who in 2013 leaked a vast trove of classified National Security Agency documents. Raised in North Carolina and Maryland, he enlisted in the Army Reserve in 2004 but left after a training injury, then worked in information technology for the CIA, including a posting in Geneva, and as a contractor for the NSA through Dell and Booz Allen Hamilton. In May 2013 he flew from Hawaii to Hong Kong and handed documents to the journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Ewen MacAskill.

The disclosures, published from June 2013, revealed the NSA's bulk collection of Americans' phone records and its access to data from major internet companies, setting off a global debate on surveillance. Charged by the United States under the Espionage Act, Snowden was stranded in Moscow when his passport was cancelled and was granted asylum in Russia, becoming a Russian citizen in 2022. Supporters regard him as a whistleblower who exposed unlawful spying; critics, including US officials, say his leaks harmed national security and question his life under Vladimir Putin's government.

§ Common questions

4 answers

What is Edward Snowden's political ideology?

Edward Snowden is a libertarian-leaning civil libertarian whose central cause is privacy against state surveillance: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, a Reformist Civil Libertarian. Economically he sits on the market side of centre (+44), reflecting a technology-world individualism that led him to back Ron Paul in 2012. On governance he is clearly libertarian (−36), having exposed and opposed mass surveillance, and socially he is progressive (+50), treating privacy as the foundation of free expression and dissent.

Is Edward Snowden left-wing or right-wing?

Neither cleanly; he is best described as a libertarian. Snowden donated to Ron Paul's 2012 campaign and distrusts concentrated state power, positions shared by the libertarian right, while his defence of privacy, press freedom and whistleblowing has won strong support on the civil-libertarian left. Opinion about him cuts across party lines: politicians in both major US parties have called him a traitor, while others in both have argued for clemency.

Is Edward Snowden a whistleblower or a traitor?

Opinion remains divided, and the question has never been tested in court. Snowden is charged in the United States under the Espionage Act, which allows no public-interest defence, and US officials argue his leaks exposed intelligence methods and harmed national security. Supporters point out that courts later found the phone-records programme he revealed unlawful and that Congress ended it in 2015. His acceptance of asylum in Russia and, in 2022, Russian citizenship remains a central point of criticism.
