The Cosmic Optimist imagines the end of scarcity itself. In Bogdanov's Red Star (1908) the Martians hold all property in common and choose their work freely according to published statistics of need, and later visions such as Bastani's Fully Automated Luxury Communism (2019) expect automation and abundant energy to make markets, wages and private ownership obsolete.

Governance+26
LibertarianAuthoritarian

Faith that communism is history's, even the cosmos's, inevitable destination gives the archetype a moderately authoritarian streak: Bogdanov was a Bolshevik leader until 1909, and the Soviet state hailed Gagarin's 1961 flight as proof that its one-party system owned the future. Yet the imagined endpoint, as in Iain M. Banks's Culture novels from 1987, is a free society without coercion.

The archetype is futurist to its core, treating tradition, nation and even the limits of the human body as stages to be outgrown. Russian cosmism dreamed of conquering death and settling space, Yefremov's Andromeda (1957) pictured a united, secular humanity joining a Great Ring of galactic civilisations, and Bastani's 2019 manifesto welcomes gene editing, automation and asteroid mining as tools of liberation.

§ The story

Archetype

The Cosmic Optimist is the archetype of the radical who looks to the stars and sees communism: the conviction that any civilisation advanced enough to cross space must have abolished scarcity, classes and the state, and that humanity's own destiny is a liberated, post-scarcity future among the planets. Its real lineage runs from Alexander Bogdanov's Martian utopia Red Star (1908) and the Russian cosmism of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky to Ivan Yefremov's Soviet novel Andromeda (1957), J. Posadas's 1968 theses on flying saucers and Aaron Bastani's Fully Automated Luxury Communism (2019).

The archetype recurs whenever technology seems to outrun politics. The Soviet space triumphs of Sputnik in 1957 and Yuri Gagarin's orbit in 1961 were presented as proof that socialism owned the future, and later science fiction, from Star Trek's moneyless Federation to Iain M. Banks's anarchic Culture novels, kept the image alive in the West. It reveals both the utopian hope inside revolutionary politics and its weakness: a faith that history's destination is guaranteed can excuse impatience with the messy, democratic road toward it.

4 answers

What is the Cosmic Optimist's political ideology?

The Cosmic Optimist is a utopian communist who expects technology and history to deliver a classless future among the stars: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, a Progressive Posadist. Economically the archetype sits at the collectivist extreme (−94), expecting abundance to abolish markets and private property. On governance it leans moderately authoritarian (+26), trusting revolutionary movements and planning states to steer history toward its destination. Socially it is strongly progressive (+72), treating tradition as something humanity will outgrow.

Is the Cosmic Optimist left-wing or right-wing?

Left-wing. The archetype's goal is a society without classes, money or private ownership of production, which places it on the far left economically, and its futurism puts it on the progressive side socially. Its governance lean is more complicated: it flourished in the propaganda of one-party states such as the Soviet Union, yet its imagined endpoint is free and stateless. Not every techno-optimist belongs here; the archetype is specifically the communist version of the dream.

Why did Posadists believe aliens must be communist?

Because J. Posadas reasoned from Marxism to the cosmos. In a 1968 essay on flying saucers he argued that any civilisation capable of travelling between planets must have developed its productive forces far beyond what capitalism allows, and so must already have reached socialism. He concluded that humanity should appeal to such visitors to help end poverty on Earth. Other Marxists ridiculed the idea, and it later made Posadism famous as an internet joke.
