Peikoff holds Rand's view that laissez-faire capitalism is the only moral system, defended in his treatise Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (1991) as the political expression of rational egoism. He treats the mixed economy as unstable and morally compromised, a path that The Ominous Parallels (1982) argues leads toward statism.

Governance−88
LibertarianAuthoritarian

He wants a government limited to protecting individual rights through police, courts and the armed forces, with no redistributive or regulatory role. The Ominous Parallels (1982) warned that the ideas that led Weimar Germany to Nazism were gaining ground in the United States. Unlike anarcho-capitalists, he insists on a single government holding a monopoly of retaliatory force.

Social+10
TraditionalProgressive

Socially Peikoff is a militant secularist who regards religion's influence on politics as a grave threat to reason, which is why he urged voters to back Democrats in the 2006 midterm elections as the lesser danger. That secularism and his support for abortion rights are offset by a hawkish foreign policy and a sweeping critique of modern culture in The DIM Hypothesis (2012), leaving him near the centre socially.

§ The story

Living

Leonard Peikoff (born 1933) is a Canadian-born American philosopher and Ayn Rand's designated intellectual and legal heir. Born in Winnipeg, he met Rand in 1951 as a teenager, became part of her inner circle and earned a PhD in philosophy at New York University in 1964. He taught philosophy at several colleges, gave the lecture course that became Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (1991) and in 1982 inherited Rand's estate and literary rights.

Peikoff's role has been to systematise and guard Objectivism. He co-founded the Ayn Rand Institute in 1985, and his 1989 essay Fact and Value, which declared Objectivism a closed system defined by Rand's own writings, sealed the break with the philosopher David Kelley and a lasting split between orthodox and open Objectivists. His books The Ominous Parallels (1982) and The DIM Hypothesis (2012) argue that philosophical ideas drive history. After the September 2001 attacks he called for military action against states that sponsor terrorism, singling out Iran.

§ Common questions

4 answers

What is Leonard Peikoff's political ideology?

Leonard Peikoff is an orthodox Objectivist, the leading custodian of Ayn Rand's philosophy: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, an Objectivist. Economically he is firmly pro-capitalist (+54), defending laissez-faire as the only moral system. On governance he is strongly libertarian (−88), wanting government confined to protecting individual rights, and socially he sits near the centre (+10), pairing militant secularism and abortion rights with a hawkish foreign policy and a severe critique of modern culture.

Is Leonard Peikoff left-wing or right-wing?

Right-wing on economics, but hostile to the religious right. Peikoff's defence of laissez-faire capitalism and his hawkish foreign policy align him with the right, yet he regards religion's growing influence on politics as a mortal danger and in 2006 urged voters to support Democrats against a Republican Party he saw as captured by it. His loyalty is to Objectivism rather than to any party or movement, and like Rand he rejects both conservatism and libertarianism as philosophically unsound.

Is Objectivism a closed system?

In Peikoff's view, yes. His 1989 essay Fact and Value argued that Objectivism consists of the ideas Ayn Rand herself wrote or endorsed, so later thinkers may apply and extend it but cannot revise it and still call the result Objectivism. The philosopher David Kelley replied that a philosophy must stay open to development and that Objectivists could engage with libertarians, and in 1990 he founded a rival institute. The dispute has divided the Ayn Rand Institute and The Atlas Society, Kelley's organisation, ever since.
