Antonescu harnessed Romania's economy to the Axis war, supplying oil from the Ploiești fields to Germany, while his regime pursued 'Romanianisation': decrees from late 1940 seized Jewish-owned farmland, forests, businesses and homes and transferred them to ethnic Romanians or the state. Private property otherwise remained the norm, so his order was a nationalist capitalism directed for war, well right of centre.

LibertarianAuthoritarian

Antonescu ruled as a personal military dictator. The constitution was suspended in September 1940, no parliament sat during his rule, and he governed by decree and plebiscite, with censorship, military courts and internment camps for opponents. In January 1941 he used the army to crush the Iron Guard's rebellion, ending its share of power, and from then on he alone directed the state.

Antonescu was an Orthodox nationalist and antisemite who blamed Jews for communism and for Romania's 1940 losses. Under his rule more than 13,000 Jews were killed in the Iași pogrom of June 1941 and tens of thousands in Odessa that October, and in 1942 some 25,000 Roma were deported to Transnistria. As the war turned in late 1942, he shelved plans to send the Old Kingdom's Jews to German camps.

§ The story

Historical

Ion Antonescu (1882–1946) was Romania's military dictator during the Second World War. Born in Pitești, he served as a staff officer in the First World War, as military attaché in Paris and London, briefly as chief of the general staff in the 1930s and as defence minister in Octavian Goga's short-lived far-right government of 1937–38. In September 1940, after Romania lost Bessarabia, northern Bukovina and northern Transylvania, King Carol II gave him full powers, and Antonescu forced the king to abdicate in favour of his son Michael.

Styling himself Conducător, or leader, Antonescu first shared power with the fascist Iron Guard, then crushed it in January 1941 and took Romania into Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union. His regime carried out the Iași pogrom and the Odessa massacre and deported Jews and Roma to Transnistria, where tens of thousands died of hunger, disease and shootings; an international commission found in 2004 that between 280,000 and 380,000 Jews were murdered or died under Romanian authority. Arrested in King Michael's coup of August 1944, he was tried and executed in 1946.

What was Ion Antonescu's political ideology?

Ion Antonescu was a military dictator of the nationalist far right: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, a Reactionary Fascist. Economically he sat well right of centre (+70), directing a private-property economy for the Axis war while seizing Jewish property for ethnic Romanians. On governance he was near the authoritarian maximum (+94), ruling by decree as Conducător, and socially he was strongly reactionary (−68), an Orthodox nationalist and antisemite whose regime carried out the Holocaust in Romanian-ruled lands.

Was Ion Antonescu left-wing or right-wing?

Right-wing, on the far right. Antonescu was a nationalist general who took power with the backing of the fascist Iron Guard, allied Romania with Nazi Germany and fought the Soviet Union in the name of anti-communism. He later crushed the Iron Guard, but as a rival for power rather than an ideological opponent, and his regime's antisemitic laws, deportations and massacres place him firmly on the authoritarian far right, whatever his quarrels with the legionaries.

What was Ion Antonescu's role in the Holocaust?

Central. The international commission chaired by Elie Wiesel concluded in 2004 that, of Nazi Germany's allies, Romania under Antonescu bore responsibility for the deaths of more Jews than any other, putting the toll at between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews. His forces carried out the Iași pogrom and the Odessa massacre of 1941 and deported Jews and Roma to Transnistria, where many died. Romania officially acknowledged this history after the commission's report.
