§ Where Corneliu Codreanu stands
3 axesCodreanu rejected both liberal capitalism and communism, but his economics were ethnic rather than collectivist. In the mid-1930s the Legion ran voluntary work camps building roads and churches and launched 'Legionary commerce', a network of shops and restaurants meant to move trade out of Jewish hands and into Romanian ones. He sought to transfer property to ethnic Romanians, not to abolish it, which places him right of centre.
Codreanu built a movement around obedience to a charismatic leader. His 1933 Nest Leader's Manual organised members into small cells called nests, bound by discipline and secrecy, and the Legion practised political murder: Prime Minister Ion Duca was shot in December 1933, and the former legionary Mihai Stelescu was hacked to death in 1936 after breaking with the Captain.
The Legion was among the most religious of fascist movements. Codreanu invoked the Archangel Michael, held religious oath ceremonies, demanded national rebirth through sacrifice and treated Jews as the enemy of the Romanian nation, campaigning from his student days for quotas against Jewish students. His book For My Legionaries (1936) frames politics as a spiritual struggle for the soul of the nation.

HistoricalCorneliu Zelea Codreanu (1899–1938) was the founder and 'Captain' of the Legion of the Archangel Michael, Romania's fascist movement, better known by the name of its paramilitary wing, the Iron Guard. Born in Huși in Moldavia, he studied law at Iași, where he led violent antisemitic student agitation, and in 1923 co-founded A. C. Cuza's National-Christian Defence League. In 1924 he shot dead the Iași police prefect, Constantin Manciu, and was acquitted by a jury the following year.
Codreanu founded the Legion in 1927, fusing Orthodox mysticism, a cult of sacrificial death and violent antisemitism into one of interwar Europe's largest fascist movements. Legionnaires assassinated Prime Minister Ion Duca in 1933, and the movement's party won about 16 per cent of the vote in the 1937 elections. King Carol II, establishing his own dictatorship, had Codreanu imprisoned in 1938 and killed by gendarmes that November, supposedly while trying to escape. His followers took a brief share of power in 1940, and his cult survives on the Romanian far right.
