Zoller has no economic views of his own; he is a product of the regime's war economy. Goebbels packages his exploits into Nation's Pride, a feature-length propaganda film premiered as a gala event, turning a soldier's killings into a commodity for mass consumption. The placement just right of centre reflects the Nazi order he serves, a state-directed war economy that left property and much of industry in private hands.

LibertarianAuthoritarian

As the state's poster boy, Zoller enjoys direct access to power and uses it without hesitation: he enlists Goebbels to have his premiere moved to Shosanna's cinema, where Hitler himself will attend, whatever she wants. In the projection booth he drops his polite manner and forces his way in, showing the hero cult's assumption that the will of the celebrated soldier must prevail.

Zoller personifies the militarised nationalism of the Third Reich, celebrated for the number of enemy soldiers he has shot. Tarantino gives him a flicker of conscience: at the premiere he leaves the auditorium, unable to watch his own killings on screen. That unease never becomes dissent, and his sense of entitlement toward Shosanna exposes the contempt beneath the charm.

§ The story

Fiction

Frederick Zoller, spelled Fredrick in the film's credits, is a young German private in Quentin Tarantino's 2009 war film Inglourious Basterds, played by Daniel Brühl. Celebrated as a war hero for holding off Allied troops single-handedly from a sniper's nest in Italy, he is about to star as himself in Nation's Pride, a propaganda feature produced by Joseph Goebbels. In occupied Paris he falls for the cinema owner Shosanna Dreyfus, unaware that she is a Jew who escaped the massacre of her family.

Zoller is Tarantino's study of fascist celebrity: boyish, polite and apparently modest, he is a hero manufactured by the state to sell the war, and his charm turns to menace when Shosanna rejects him. His insistence that Goebbels move the premiere to her cinema sets up the climax in which the Nazi leadership burns. The film within the film, Nation's Pride, parodies the propaganda features of Goebbels's film industry, making Zoller a lasting emblem of how regimes glamorise killing.

What is Frederick Zoller's political ideology?

Frederick Zoller is a Nazi war hero turned propaganda star: on the 99ideologies three-axis compass, a Reactionary Nazi. Economically he sits slightly right of centre (+24) as a creature of the Third Reich's war economy and propaganda industry. On governance he is near the authoritarian extreme (+92), a celebrity soldier who uses his access to Goebbels to get his way, and socially he is strongly traditionalist (−78), embodying the regime's militarised nationalism behind a boyish, courteous manner.

Is Frederick Zoller left-wing or right-wing?

Right-wing, as a willing servant of the far-right Nazi regime. Zoller never talks ideology, which is part of Tarantino's point: he seems a pleasant young man, yet he is a decorated killer for an ultranationalist, racist dictatorship and happily lends his face to its propaganda. His discomfort while watching his own film hints at a conscience, but he never turns against the regime, and his pursuit of Shosanna ends in violence rather than doubt.

Was Nation's Pride a real Nazi propaganda film?

No. Nation's Pride, or Stolz der Nation, was invented for Inglourious Basterds, and its black-and-white battle scenes were shot specially for the film. But it parodies a real industry. Goebbels controlled German cinema through the Reich Chamber of Culture and studios the state had bought up, and in 1945 the regime released Kolberg, a lavish colour epic of heroic resistance directed by Veit Harlan with soldiers drafted in as extras. Tarantino's film within the film imitates that blend of spectacle and lies.
