§ Where The Refusal of Work (archetype) stands
3 axesThe refusal of work attacks the wage relation rather than any particular owner. The Hot Autumn of 1969 brought demands for equal pay rises for all, decoupled from productivity, and autonomists later called for a guaranteed social income and shorter hours. It offers no blueprint for collective ownership or planning, aiming to reclaim time from capital rather than to administer production, so its leftward lean is moderate.
Its politics are leaderless and self-organised. At Mirafiori in 1969 the workers' and students' assembly bypassed the official unions and the Communist Party, and the autonomist groups of the 1970s rejected the vanguard party in favour of direct action. Without any party discipline, however, parts of the milieu drifted into armed violence by 1977, a history the archetype has to carry.
The refusal of work is emancipatory and anti-traditional, rejecting the work ethic that Catholic and communist cultures alike celebrated. Italy's Movement of 1977 joined it to feminism, the youth counterculture and free radio such as Bologna's Radio Alice (1976), and the Wages for Housework campaign launched in 1972 extended the refusal to the unpaid labour of the home.

ArchetypeThe Refusal of Work is the archetype of workers' autonomy at its most radical: the collective decision to reject work itself, and the wage relation behind it, as the measure of life. It stands for the absenteeism, wildcat strikes and go-slows of Italy's Hot Autumn of 1969 at FIAT's Mirafiori plant in Turin, theorised by Mario Tronti as the strategy of refusal and carried on by Potere Operaio and Autonomia Operaia in the 1970s, with roots in Paul Lafargue's The Right to Be Lazy (1880).
The archetype recurs whenever work stops seeming to deliver a good life. Italian autonomists turned it into slogans for less work and more pay, and Mariarosa Dalla Costa, Silvia Federici and Selma James extended it to unpaid housework. It returned in the post-work theories of the 2010s, such as Kathi Weeks's The Problem with Work (2011), and in popular revolts against overwork, from China's lying-flat trend of 2021 to Western talk of quiet quitting. Critics on the left and right alike reply that work also brings dignity, skill and solidarity.
