§ Where Javier Milei stands
3 axesMilei is a radical free-marketeer of the Austrian school. On taking office in December 2023 he devalued the peso by more than half and issued Decree 70/2023 scrapping or rewriting hundreds of regulations, and the 2024 Ley Bases opened the way to privatisations. His promises to dollarise and close the central bank went unfulfilled, but he lifted most currency controls in 2025.
Milei calls himself an anarcho-capitalist and describes the state as a criminal organisation, cutting ministries, public jobs and subsidies. Where his libertarianism stops is in method: he governs heavily by emergency decree, vetoed congressional increases in pensions and university funding in 2024, and backed a security protocol restricting street protests, leading critics to accuse him of authoritarian tendencies.
Milei is culturally conservative. He opposes the abortion law Argentina passed in 2020, dismantled the Ministry of Women, Genders and Diversity, and in a January 2025 speech at Davos attacked feminism, gender ideology and what he called the woke agenda, prompting large protest marches in Argentina. He frames these positions as a defence of the family and of Western values.

LivingJavier Gerardo Milei (b. 1970) is an Argentine economist and politician who became president of Argentina in December 2023. Born in Buenos Aires, he worked as a private-sector economist, including as chief economist of the conglomerate Corporación América, and became a nationally known television commentator whose furious attacks on the political caste made him a media phenomenon. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Buenos Aires in 2021 with his coalition La Libertad Avanza, he won the presidency two years later by defeating the Peronist economy minister Sergio Massa in a runoff.
Milei campaigned brandishing a chainsaw as a symbol of cuts to the state, promising to dollarise the economy and abolish the central bank. In office he devalued the peso, halved the number of ministries, issued a sweeping deregulation decree and pushed the Ley Bases through Congress in 2024, posting a fiscal surplus and bringing annual inflation, above 200 per cent when he took office, sharply down. Critics point to rising poverty in his first months, cuts to universities and pensions, frequent rule by decree and combative rhetoric toward opponents and the press.
